Theodora Thomas is a multi-media artist living and working in London. She engages with the body as an activator, and the point at which the boundary between bodies and the earth becomes blurry. Within her work, there is a constant exchange between the internal and external.
Her work embodies an evolving and experimental approach to materiality, with the interplay of material languages as a motivator for her making. She plays with the balance between exposure and concealment of process, considering the ethics of extraction and the wider systems we inhabit, which have become obscured. Our continual feeding of these systems actively depletes the resources of land and bodies in destructive tandem, a truth we must reckon with.
Viewers are guided through her sculptural interventions within space, and time is carved out for intimate encounters, leading to moments of detachment and reflection, and perhaps also some peace. These encounters begin to shape alternative models of how we can relate to each other. Circles are slowly formed in which we can see each other’s faces, and meditative consideration of handcrafted material is the starting point to imagine new worlds. Audiences are prompted to consider their individual agency but also the power as a collective, a shared knowledge from which hope grows.
